Over the past few years there has been a shift to healthy living, not only in abroad, but also here in South Africa. Steam showers provide a great way of eliminating toxins from the body. Summer Place Spas & Baths have realised the increased demand for in-house steam showers and has therefore introduced the Atlantis Steam Cabin to their superior range of products.
History of the sauna
The steam shower has only recently become famous – its predecessor, the sauna have been around for years and have an interesting history with the first one used to provide relieve against dropping winter temperatures. Pits were dug in slopes in the ground with a fireplace where people heated stones. Once the stones were hot enough, water was thrown over it to produce steam. This would cause the temperature to rise so that people could take their clothes off.
Having a sauna was and still is a social affair. These days one would find a sauna at most spa resorts where visitors can enjoy the relaxation and rejuvenating experience of a sauna. When the temperature increases, it induces sweating, which enhances the body’s ability to get rid of toxins.
In more traditional saunas the temperature would average around 80°C. However, in Finnish saunas the temperature can go as high as 90°C.
